Pheromone signalling pathway (IMAGE)
Caption
The pheromone signalling pathway (shown schematically on the left) possesses multiple positive and negative feedbacks that are induced at varying stimulation strength. Theoretical analysis suggests that maximal information transmission (highest accuracy) is achieved at the highest sensitivity of induction of both negative feedbacks. However, the best possible compromise between information transmission and energetic cost is achieved with a lower sensitivity of the feedback 2 induction, consistent with the natural design of the pathway.
