To test their capacity to learn, the mice are trained to find an underwater platform which is not visible to them from the edge of a water basin. The swimming path is marked in red. If the gene for the toxic tau protein in this mouse is switched off for a few weeks using a genetic trick, the mouse is able to learn normally again and quickly finds its way to the platform.
