Simple Organism, Complex Tissue (4 of 4) (IMAGE)
Caption
Schematic of epithelial organization in D. discoideum and metazoans Illustrations of the D. discoideum tip epithelium (left) and a typical metazoan simple epithelium (right). Both tissues consists of a monolayer of structurally and functionally polarized cells surrounding a luminal space. In the case of D. discoideum, this space contains the stalk tube and stalk cells. This image relates to an article that appeared in the March 11, 2011, issue of Science, published by AAAS. The study, by Dr. Daniel J. Dickinson, at Stanford University in Stanford, Calif., and colleagues was titled, "A Polarized Epithelium Organized by Beta- and Alpha-Catenin Predates Cadherin and Metazoan Origins."
