Edge of the Coronal Mass Ejection and Flux Rope (IMAGE)
Caption
The brighter area represents the edge of the coronal mass ejection -- a large slinky-like structure known as a flux rope -- while the fainter area beyond that represents the bow shock. Measuring the distance between these two can help scientists measure the magnetic field strength in the corona.
