Chemical changes to histones, proteins that provide structure for DNA, can alter gene expression. Above, individual spots represent acetylated histones in a brain region called the hippocampus. The researchers found the loss of acetyl groups from histones is key to the development of anxiety- and depression-like behaviors in stressed mice.
