Bombs Away! A Deep Sea Worm's Defense (2 of 8) (VIDEO)

This is a newly discovered worm swimming in the water column of Astoria Canyon off Oregon at 1,863 meters depth. The fans of long bristles are used in combination with undulations of the body to swim in forward (seen here) and rearward directions. This video relates to an article that appeared in the Aug. 21, 2009, issue of Science, published by AAAS. The brevium, by Dr. Karen J. Osborn of The Scripps Institution of Oceanography and colleagues, was titled, "Deep-Sea, Swimming Worms with Luminescent 'Bombs.'"
