This is a retinal tomograph of a normal-sighted human showing the optic disc and macula (to left). The 3-D view of the cell layers in the macula is shown. The image was obtained with a Heidelberg Spectralis, Vista, Calif. This image relates to an article that appeared in the March 3, 2010, issue of Science Translational Medicine. The study, by Dr. Defne Amado of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, Pa., and colleagues was titled, "Safety and Efficacy of Subretinal Readministration of a Viral Vector in Large Animals to Treat Congenital Blindness."
