International collaboration on the El'gygytgyn Drilling Project was visible every day during drilling operations via national flags representing the homelands of the participants. This image relates to a paper that appeared in the May 9, 2013, issue of Science Express, published by AAAS. The paper, by Julie Brigham-Grette at University of Massachusetts in Amherst, Mass., and colleagues was titled, "Pliocene Warmth, Polar Amplification, and Stepped Pleistocene Cooling Recorded in NE Arctic Russia."
