Simple Organism, Complex Tissue (1 of 4) (VIDEO)
Caption
This shows a series of confocal slices through the tip of a wild-type fruiting body stained with phalloidin. The sections are separated by 1 μm. Tip epithelial cells are packed in an organized manner and form a single layer that surrounds the stalk. This video relates to an article that appeared in the March 11, 2011, issue of Science, published by AAAS. The study, by Dr. Daniel J. Dickinson, at Stanford University in Stanford, Calif., and colleagues was titled, "A Polarized Epithelium Organized by Beta- and Alpha-Catenin Predates Cadherin and Metazoan Origins."
