The social amoeba Dictyostelium discoideum aggregates to form a multicellular slug that migrates and ultimately produces a fruiting body consisting of dead stalk cells and live spore cells. This image relates to an article that appeared in the March 12, 2010, issue of Science, published by AAAS. The study, by Dr. West of the Oxford University in Oxford, UK, and colleagues, was titled, "Altruism, Spite and Greenbeards."
