REM sleep, the major source of dreams, and slow wave sleep are unique to mammals and birds. This material relates to a paper that appeared in the Oct. 23, 2015, issue of Science, published by AAAS. The paper, by Yu Hayashi at University of Tsukuba in Tsukuba, Japan, and colleagues was titled, "Cells of a common developmental origin regulate REM/non-REM sleep and wakefulness in mice."
