Marine Flatworm (VIDEO)
Caption
A 5-centimeter long marine flatworm swims by manipulating its body geometry without apparent stretching. The mathematical model to the right uses theory developed by Shankar Venkataramani's University of Arizona group to construct a synthetic swimming "stroke" in which the sheet is always unstretched, and correspondingly, the energy budget is very small.
