Cloud Patterns Over the Greenland and Iceland Seas

MODIS true-colour satellite image showing linear cloud patterns known as 'cloud streets' over the Greenland and Iceland Seas. These clouds are a signature of the transfer of heat and moisture that warms the atmosphere and cools the ocean resulting in a convective overturning of the water column, a process that plays an important role in the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation. The island of Jan Mayen is in the center of the image and the flow around its topography results in the formation of spiraling cloud patterns known as 'von Karman vortices'.
