Secrets Behind Sparse Coding (1 of 2) (IMAGE)
Caption
Arborization of a giant GABAergic neuron in an adult locust mushroom body, revealed by intracellular iontophoresis of fluorescent dye and confocal microscopy. Note the varicose axonal projections and the very fine dendrites, overlapping respectively with the dendritic and axonal projection zones of Kenyon cells. This image relates to an article that appeared in the May 6, 2011, issue of Science, published by AAAS. The study, by Maria Papadopoulou of California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, CA, and colleagues, was titled, "Normalization for Sparse Encoding of Odors by a Wide-Field Interneuron."
