This is a fluorescent micrograph of an atherosclerotic plaque with a thick collagen cap. It is from a mouse with enhanced TGF-beta/IL-17 signaling. Red color is fat (Oil Red O) and green is collagen (Picro Sirius Red). This image relates to a paper that appeared in the July 31, 2013, issue of Science Translational Medicine, published by AAAS. The paper, by A. Gisterå at the Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, Sweden, and colleagues was titled, "Transforming Growth Factor-β Signaling in T Cells Promotes Stabilization of Atherosclerotic Plaques Through an Interleukin-17-Dependent Pathway."
