On Oct. 18 the GPM core satellite found extremely heavy rainfall of more than 227 mm (8.9 inches) per hour was located in the southeastern side of the typhoon's eye wall Extremely tall thunderstorm towers there reached altitudes above 18.6 km (11.5 miles).
