University at Buffalo geologist Jason Briner collecting rock samples on Dall Island, Southeast Alaska. The samples, collected from mountain summits directly facing the Pacific Ocean (pictured in the background), were used to determine when Ice Age glaciers retreated from the area, making it available as a migration route for America's first colonizers. This material relates to a paper that appeared in the 30 May 2018, issue of Science Advances, published by AAAS. The paper, by A.J. Lesnek at University at Buffalo in Buffalo, NY, and colleagues was titled, "Deglaciation of the Pacific coastal corridor directly preceded the human colonization of the Americas."
