Healing Polymer Materials from the Inside Out (11 of 15) (IMAGE)
Caption
View of the experimental setup for the restoration procedure. A large central damage region is created through a thin epoxy sample with microvascular channels, filled with healing fluids. The reactive fluids are delivered via microvascular channels using a computer-controlled pressurized system. Fluorescent dyes are added to the fluids and imaged by an overhead camera to track the progress of healing. This image is immediately after starting delivery of fluid streams. This image relates to a paper that appeared in May 9, 2014, issue of Science, published by AAAS. The paper, by Scott White at University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign in Urbana, Ill., and colleagues was titled, "Restoration of Large Damage Volumes in Polymers."
