Liver cells in this mouse contain the fluorescent protein iRFP. At left, black-and white-photo of animal in ordinary light. At right, the same mouse after exposure to near infra-red light, which has caused iRFP to emit light waves that are also near infra-red. The composite images shows these fluorescent near infra-red waves passing readily through the animal’s tissues to reveal its brightly glowing liver.
