Dog burial from Horizon 11 of the Koster site, Greene County, Illinois, US. The fossil specimen at this site have a calibrated age of 8,500 years Before the Present. This image relates to a paper that appeared in the 15 November, 2013, issue of Science, published by AAAS. The paper, by Olaf Thalmann at the University of Turku in Turku, Finland, and colleagues was titled, "Complete Mitochondrial Genomes of Ancient Canids Suggest a European Origin of Domestic Dogs."
