White birch chips. Commercial white birch chips were used as feedstock in this work. The technology can be expanded to use other types of biomass, such as corn stover, grasses or forestry residues. This material relates to a paper that appeared in the May 19, 2017, issue of Science Advances, published by AAAS. The paper, by D.M. Alonso at University of Wisconsin-Madison in Madison, Wis., and colleagues was titled, "Increasing the revenue from lignocellulosic biomass: Maximizing feedstock utilization."
