Whooping Cough: A Small Drop in Vaccine Protection Can Lead to a Case Upsurge (IMAGE)

Disease cases of pertussis reported by the National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System in the US between the years 1922-2014, shows the decline in disease following the initial use of the DTP (Diphtheria-Tetanus-Pertussis) vaccine, the steady rise in disease beginning around the 1990s, and the recent outbreak years of 2005, 2009 and 2012. Recently-developed vaccines are also indicated: DTaP (Diphtheria-Tetanus-acellular Pertussis) and the adolescent booster vaccine Tdap (Tetanus-diphtheria-acellular pertussis).
