As part of a study involving 4 newly sequenced fungal genomes, researchers conducted wood decay experiments on isolates of Botryobasidium botryosum, growing them on pine and aspen wood. As shown here, in localized areas of the aspen wood, B. botryosum broke down the cell walls and removed cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin.
