Healing Polymer Materials from the Inside Out (14 of 15) (VIDEO)
Caption
Video of vascular delivery of restorative materials to impact damage in an epoxy sheet, overhead view, at 75x the actual speed. The restorative material begins as a liquid which infiltrates the cracks and wets the inner surface of the damage. The liquid transitions to a gel, which creates a scaffold for the delivery of new restorative materials and eventual recovery of the entire damage region. This video is immediately after starting delivery of fluid streams. This image relates to a paper that appeared in May 9, 2014, issue of Science, published by AAAS. The paper, by Scott White at University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign in Urbana, Ill., and colleagues was titled, "Restoration of Large Damage Volumes in Polymers."
