Earthquakes Through Time (VIDEO)
Caption
This video shows modelled wastewater injection-induced pressure increase and observed widely-felt earthquakes in north-central Oklahoma and southern Kansas. In the deep sedimentary Arbuckle group, hundreds of disposal wells are injecting salty water that is coproduced with oil. Injection is increasing pressure and resulting in destabilization of tectonically loaded pre-existing faults capable of producing widely-felt and potentially damaging earthquakes.
