Internal Compass Guides Glass Eels As They Swim, In Time with the Tides (3 of 15)

Anguilla Anguilla. European eel at the silver life history stage with significantly enlarged eyes. The migration back to the spawning area in the Sargasso Sea starts in the fall and is believed to last more than one year. During this period, the eels stop feeding. They are extremely robust and are capable of migrating over land for short distances. This material relates to a paper that appeared in the June 09, 2017, issue of Science Advances, published by AAAS. The paper, by A. Cresci at Rosenstiel School of Marine & Atmospheric Science in Miami, Fla., and colleagues was titled, "Glass eels (Anguilla Anguilla) have a magnetic compass linked to the tidal cycle."
