'Chicken Creek' ‑‑ An Ecosystem in the Making

Researchers from the Technische Universitaet Muenchen and other institutions are studying the development of a fledgling ecosystem at a site called Huehnerwasser or "Chicken Creek." In a former open‑pit coal mining area of Brandenburg, Germany, scientists partitioned off a surface of six hectares and left nature to its own resources. They are closely observing soil, flora, and fauna to determine what factors have a particularly strong influence on developing ecosystems.
