Shown are the changes in contact area (warmer colors higher contact, cooler colors lower contact) along a frictional interface in space and time as the rupture front propagates. This image relates to an article that appeared in the Oct. 8, 2010, issue of Science, published by AAAS. The study, by Dr. Oded Ben-David of Hebrew University of Jerusalem in Jerusalem, Israel, and colleagues was titled, "The Dynamics of the Onset of Frictional Slip."
