These are aggregates of evolved Geobacter coculture in culture bottle. This image relates to an article that appeared in the Dec. 3, 2010, issue of Science, published by AAAS. The study, by Ms. Zarath Summers, at University of Massachusetts in Amherst, Mass., and colleagues was titled, "Direct Exchange of Electrons Within Aggregates of an Evolved Syntrophic Coculture of Anaerobic Bacteria."
