Boreal forest fire leads to charcoal accumulation in soil. This image relates to an article that appeared in the May 2, 2008 issue of the journal Science, published by AAAS. The study, by Dr. David Wardle and colleagues at Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences in Umeå, Sweden, was titled "Fire-Derived Charcoal Causes Loss of Forest Humus."
