The figure shows the share of authors in a particular author position (from 1-6, for teams of six) who made different types of contributions, such as designing the study or performing experiments. Inferring the number and types of contributions from the author position will often result in errors, even for first and last authors. This material relates to a paper that appeared in the Nov. 15, 2017, issue of Science Advances, published by AAAS. The paper, by H. Sauermann at Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, Ga., and colleagues was titled, 'Authorship and contribution disclosures.'
