Distribution of Priority Ranks among Patients Hospitalized in the Medical Intensive Care Unit (IMAGE)
Caption
Patients admitted to the medical ICU were categorized based on priority ranks according to ICU triage guidelines from the Society of Critical Care Medicine. On ICU admission, only 46.9% of patients were ranked in the highest priority category (Priority 1). Nearly 65% of total ICU days were allocated to care that was considered discretionary monitoring (Priority 2), low likelihood of benefit despite critically illness (Priority 3), or manageable in non-ICU settings (Priority 4 and 5).
