Major Extinction Event Linked to Volcanism (2 of 4) (IMAGE)
Caption
Gouchang, Guizhou. Typical tower karst scenery in the field area in SW China. These limestones were forming immediately prior to the volcanic eruptions and became blanketed beneath a thick pile of lava flows - not seen here because they’ve been eroded away. This image relates to an article that appeared in the May 29, 2009, issue of Science, published by AAAS. The study, by Dr. Paul Wignall of the University of Leeds and colleagues was titled, "Volcanism, Mass Extinction, and Carbon Isotope Fluctuations in the Middle Permian of China."
