An actuating textile woven from coiled 450 μm nylon 6 monofilament muscles in the warp direction and silver-plated heating elements and other passive fibers in the weft direction. Electrothermal heating lifts a 3 kg load by 17.6 percent stroke. This video relates to a paper that appeared in the Feb. 21, 2014, issue of Science, published by AAAS. The paper, by Carter S. Haines at the University of Texas at Dallas in Richardson, Texas, and colleagues was titled, "Artificial Muscles from Fishing Line and Sewing Thread."
