The image on the right shows more robust cardiac muscle fiber development when the gene FN1 is active. The fibers show clear, evenly spaced bands called sarcomeres. Typically, HLHS-affected hearts lack FN1 activity, resulting in fibers with indistinct, disorganized sarcomeres (left).
