Ice penetrating radar over the freeze-on ice along the southern margin of the Gamburtsev Mountains. The plume of freeze-on ice is 1,100 m thick along this profile and the normally flat internal layers are deflected upward 400 m. This image relates to an article that appeared in the March 3, 2011, issue of Science Express, published by AAAS. The study, by Dr. Robin Bell, at Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University in Palisades, N.Y., and colleagues was titled, "Widespread, Persistent Thickening of the East Antarctic Ice Sheet by Freezing from the Base."
