Lucy and Her Daughter Scarlet Who Has PCD (IMAGE) European Respiratory Society Caption Lucy says: "The results of this research are very welcome news indeed. PCD affects every aspect of my daughter's life with twice-daily physiotherapy sessions, intense exercise and regular hospital stays to manage her lung health. The condition being both invisible, and so little known and understood, makes daily life more difficult with the need to frequently explain the impact of symptoms such as fatigue or the heightened risk of day-to-day colds and bugs to those with PCD. As the disease is so little known, even amongst medical staff, visits to the GP and ED can be frustrating and unsatisfactory. PCD requires prompt antibiotic treatment for respiratory conditions to stop them developing into e.g pneumonia, but at a time when there is a drive to reduce antibiotic use trying to get this heard and understood can be deeply frustrating. We would save a lot of hospital time, and impact on my work and my daughter's education, if our otherwise excellent GPs had more proven pathways to follow for when someone with PCD presents with an exacerbation. My daughter takes an azithromycin prophylactic three times weekly to reduce infection and inflammation. With so many aspects of the treatment and progression of this disease being unknown or unproven, the outcome of this research is very welcome and I hope is just the first step in terms of research and resultant agreed treatment pathways."
