An analysis by de Manuel Montero et al. suggests that bonobos mated with chimpanzees between 550,000 and 200,000 years ago, resulting in genetic admixture between the two species. This material relates to a paper that appeared in the Oct. 28, 2016, issue of Science, published by AAAS. The paper, by M. de Manuel at Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas-Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona, Spain, and colleagues was titled, 'Chimpanzee genomic diversity reveals ancient admixture with bonobos.'
