Pancreas and Liver Signals Shed Light on Stem Cells (3 of 3) (IMAGE)
Caption
The image shows a mouse embryo at 8 ½ days gestation, when ventral pancreatic progenitors are being induced by BMP (bone morphogenetic protein) signaling. Smad4, a mediator of BMP, is expressed in the center of the embryo (green cells) and was shown by E. Wandzioch and K. Zaret to be crucial for only a few hours of pancreatic development Smad4 is also expressed in the yolks sac surrounding the embryo (green cells). This image relates to an article that appeared in the June 26, 2009, issue of Science, published by AAAS. The study, by Dr. E. Wandzioch of the Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia, Pa., and colleagues was titled, "Dynamic Signaling Network for the Specification of Embryonic Pancreas and Liver Progenitors".
