MyShake shake table test 3 (small shake table). This photo shows the smartphones that were put on the 1-dimensional shake table (the blue machine). The shake table can simulate earthquakes such as the Northridge, Kobe, Loma Prieta earthquake, etc. The authors tested phones in different orientations, and also with the phones both attached to the wooden board and freely sitting on the shake table. This material relates to a paper that appeared in the Feb. 12, 2016, issue of Science, published by AAAS. The paper, by Q. Kong at University of California, Berkeley in Berkeley, CA, and colleagues was titled, 'MyShake: A smartphone seismic network for earthquake early warning and beyond.'
