Forest Diversity Paradox Explained (2 of 2) (IMAGE)
Caption
Low altitude remote imaging is used to determine the light available to individual trees. Elevation contours outline individual tree heights. The experimental canopy gap shown here is implemented to manipulate the light available to large trees. This image relates to an article that appeared in the February 26, 2010, issue of Science, published by AAAS. The study, by Dr. J.S. Clark of Duke University, was titled, "Individuals and the Variation Needed for High Species Diversity in Forest Trees."
