Caption
Martínez-Sykora et al. report that interactions between the magnetic fields and partially ionized gas in the solar atmosphere cause spicules, long, tendril-like ejections, to spew outward. This material relates to a paper that appeared in the June 23, 2017, issue of Science, published by AAAS. The paper, by J. Martínez-Sykora at Bay Area Environmental Research Institute in Petaluma, CA, and colleagues was titled, 'On the generation of solar spicules and Alfvén waves.'
