Hot hydrothermal vent fluid pours out of Vixen anhydrite chimney, located south of Axial caldera on the edge of an older lava flow (pre-1987). This image relates to article that appeared in the Dec. 15, 2006, issue of the journal Science, published by AAAS. The study, by Dr. Mausmi P. Mehta of University of Washington in Seattle, Wash., and colleagues, was titled "Nitrogen Fixation at 92 degrees Celcius by a Hydrothermal Vent Archaeon."
