Seasonally flooded forest (igapo) along the Jau River in Jau National Park (central Amazon), the second-largest forest reserve in South America, covering an area greater than 2.2 million hectares. Jau National Park has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This image relates to a paper that appeared in the 18 October, 2013, issue of Science, published by AAAS. The paper, by Hans ter Steege at Naturalis Biodiversity Center in Leiden, Netherlands, and colleagues was titled, "Hyperdominance in the Amazonian Tree Flora."
