Fig. 1: (a) A specific color can be selected from a broadband light source using e.g. a prism or a grating. This comes, however, at the expense of losing most of the light. (b) By applying a nonlinear optical technique such as four-wave mixing in krypton, it is possible to generate a specific color using all the available light at different colors.
