Since female gypsy moths don't fly, if they pick up virus from their virus-killed siblings on the bark, they can contaminate their egg masses with virus as she covers her eggs with scales from her wings. This image relates to an article that appeared in the Sept. 9, 2011, issue of Science, published by AAAS. The study, by Dr. K. Hoover of the Pennsylvania State University in University Park, Pa., and colleagues was titled, "A Gene for an Extended Phenotype."
