Bats attack the twisted and cupped ends of moth tails 28% of the time. Here, a big brown bat (Eptesicus fuscus) aims its attack at the tail ends of a luna (Actias luna) and African moon moth (Argema mimosa), allowing the moth to escape without damage. This material relates to a paper that appeared in the 04 July 2018, issue of Science Advances, published by AAAS. The paper, by J.J. Rubin at Boise State University in Boise, ID, and colleagues was titled, "The evolution of anti-bat sensory illusions in moths."
