Individual cells are digitally guided along pre-specified trajectories of fluorescent gene expression. 48 Escherichia coli cells are arranged vertically in the image. Time moves on towards the right. Each row therefore presents fluorescent gene expression of an individual cell over time, controlled by the researchers' computer program.
