This is a photomicrograph of an Apollo 17 sample of lunar highland rock as viewed in cross-polarized transmitted light. This material relates to a paper that appeared in the Jan. 29, 2016 issue of Science, published by AAAS. The paper, by E.D. Young at University of California, Los Angeles in Los Angeles, CA, and colleagues was titled, "Oxygen isotopic evidence for vigorous mixing during the Moon-forming giant impact."
