The TUM Institute for Advanced Study was founded in 2005 to develop new fields of scientific and technological research through interdisciplinary, international, and inter-generational collaboration in an atmosphere of inspiration, creativity and freedom. Its 10-million-euro headquarters building, at the heart of the Garching Research Center campus, was built and donated to the Technische Universitaet Muenchen by the BMW Group.
